Whereas most hermaphroditic flatworms only reproduce through an exchange of genetic material with another conspecific, ''Macrostomum hystrix'' is unusual in that it is also capable of self-fertilization through the injection of sperm from its needle-like penis into its own head in a process called hypodermic insemination or "selfing". Flatworms reared alone had disproportionate sperm in their head region compared to others with opportunities to cross fertilize.
